How I Got My Ass In Gear
Sometimes it's easy to ignore an impulse. Sometimes circumstances so obviously point you in one direction that it is simply impossible to make excuses. In my case, it all came together:
  1. I have no job, as I have been working as a marketing consultant for the past year. That means I've holed up enough money to take a month off. It also means I was able to say "later!" "not available!" to my contractees.
  2. I have no dependents (including a significant other).
  3. I'm housesitting so don't have rent to pay.
  4. I took samba dancing lessons for 3 months this year.
  5. I have a base tan.
Could it be any clearer? I still have no one to travel with - but this in itself is a blessing in disguise! I will have time to write. I will meet people. I will samba to my own beat.

And Am Taking It on the Road
I have my roundtrip ticket to Salvador, Bahia. The Nordeste (northeast) always held my fascination - the music, African culture, foods, beaches, and less touristic and more easy going style compared to Rio or Sao Paulo. Forced by the new airpass ($490 for 5 flights) regulations to set my itinerary before leaving, I've set my sights on a Salvador to Natal route, with a hop down to Minas Gerais to explore the marvels of gems galore (i.e. shop) within the colonial hill towns.

I can't wait. This is the biggest adventure of my life. There is nothing else I'd rather be doing.

[As I prepare my post trip account, here is what happened next...]

Some entertaining Brazil related material while you're at your armchair:

BOOKS:
Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice by Mark Plotkin
I had posted a review on amazon.com that went the way of the buffaloes. Suffice it to say it's one of my favorite books. In a nutshell, it's an engaging account of Plotkin's attempt to record the knowledge of medicine men for future generations.

Why is This Country Dancing?
It seems everyone has heard of this since the guy was interviewed on NPR!

OTHER:
Online Portuguese/English Dictionary
This is pretty cool. Puxa vida!

Diseases I could catch (Note:I'm not going to the rainforest)

My travel agent's website
They have awesome information about Brazil

P.S. The title of this website is a play on this travelogue someone wrote about the Yucatan many years ago.
